An opportunity to learn how to understand and handle horses

Structured courses for schools can be a single day out to experience horses for youngsters who might not have had the opportunity to come in close contact with ponies or can be for longer period.Pupils can complete their short course ASDAN targets, take COPE modules or work towards British Horse Society badges and certificates.
The British Horse Society examinations are recognised by the education authority.
Young people can also complete sections for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Horses communicate with body language and an insight into the psychology of the horse allows the handler to progress with the horses training in a safe and easy way.

The introduction will cover safety in the stables and around horses, the horse’s natural instincts and how they apply to handling.
Care-cleanliness of the horse and stables and preparation of the horses for riding with regard to maintaining the welfare of the horses and promoting health and safety for the horse and rider.
Students will be able to handle the horses and ponies. We usually use some of the smaller ponies as some people find their size quite intimidating until they understand them better.
Grooming, handling, feeding, sizes, colours, types and characteristics are all covered with most of the instruction taking a practical hands on approach where possible.
Fitting the saddle and bridle for riding and care of the horse and equipment after riding.

Riding covers basic skills enabling the student to ride a quiet horse in a controlled situation in walk and trot.
The mounted instruction takes place in the indoor school.

Riding hats are provided. The riders will need to equip themselves with long trousers and shoes with a heel, Wellington boots are o.k. but preferably not trainers which afford little protection if toes are trodden on and with flat undersides are more likely to slide too far into the stirrups.
On completion of a course of lessons riders will be awarded Proficiency Certificates to the level they have achieved.
